When clients enter therapy with issues related to their relationship with one or both parents, it is often times related to trauma, dysfunction, or conflict that dates back to childhood. A few examples can include:
- one or both parents in active addiction
- parents not accepting kid's LGBTQ+ status
- abuse inside the home (verbal, physical, sexual)
- parents not showing an interest in their children
- protecting molesters or not believing abuse occurred
- showing favoritism of one or more siblings over the others
- giving older siblings too much responsibility over younger siblings
- acting more as a friend than a parent
- inconsistent parenting or discipline
- jealousy of children or step-children
- children in and out of child protective services due to unfit parents
With my help, you can learn healthy boundary setting, communication, and conflict resolution for navigating relationships with your parents now that you're an adult.
